How low will Istanbul's reservoirs go — and can May tell us?
Roughly, yes. “May level minus 40 points” predicted the autumn low with a mean error of 9.3 points over 18 out-of-sample years — 43% less than assuming an average year (16.4). Press play to watch 23 years of the city's ten reservoirs.

02 · The answer
The level on 1 May sets the floor
May level and the autumn low move together (r = ). “May level minus the median drop” is the rule tested below.
The calculator applies the historical rule; it is not a forecast for any real year (the portal's data end in February 2024). At low May levels the rule ran low: in 2008, 2014 and 2023 the drop was only 15–33 points.

What I found
Between May and the autumn low the city loses a median 40 points of fill (about 347 million m³); in the middle half of years 34–49.
The May rule's mean error is 9.3 points against 16.4 for an average-year guess (18 rolling-origin forecasts, 2006–2023). A regression adds nothing (9.5).
The rest is the weather after May: the biggest misses were dry years the rule was too optimistic about — 2013 (22 pts), 2022 (19 pts).
Every year that entered May below 50% ended below 20% (4 of 4). The one sub-20% year that started high was 2020 (69% in May).
Read with care
Reservoir levels only: no rainfall, consumption or transfers from outside the basin (e.g. Melen). This measures how much water was lost, not why.
The per-dam series ends on 19 Feb 2024, the city-wide one on 7 Apr 2021. This is not a forecast for 2026.
23 years is a small sample; “4 of 4” is a pattern, not a law.
A season runs from 1 May to the end of February, so the 2020 low falls in January 2021.
Tank size shows capacity (area ∝ M m³); the two smallest dams are drawn at a minimum size. Istrancalar is a group of five small dams; its marker sits at one of them.
